Who we are

Herald Island Environmental Group have been actively restoring the Herald Island environment since 1995 when they started out as Keep Herald Island Beautiful.

What we do

We aim to motivate and equip Herald Islanders to protect and restore the island’s unique natural environment and surrounding waterways; so that its’ local native plants, birds and wildlife flourish and the community has a healthy, thriving place to enjoy.

This dream is being realised through our ‘Bringing Back the Birds’ programme, which encompasses:  island wide predator control, monitoring and bird counts; reserves weed control  and re-vegetation using locally sourced native plants grown in our community nursery;  annual island wide ‘Weed it Out’ weekends and waterways regenerating activities.

Our projects enhance the Herald Island section of the North-West Wildlink wildlife corridor between Auckland’s east and west coasts and are kindly funded and supported by the Upper Harbour Local Board and Auckland Council.
