Habitat Hobsonville
Butterfly project
Butterflies - universally recognised and loved as a sign of happiness, spreading joy over summer as they flit from flower to flower. Aotearoa is blessed with native and endemic species that thrive on our unique native plants and they form part of the complex ecosystem.
However, pest wasps are decimating populations as they feed on caterpillars. So, human intervention is needed.
Habitat Hobsonville volunteers are on a mission to provide a pest free environment to raise caterpillars and to enable butterflies to be released into the wild again.
We have the perfect site, we have permission, we even have partial sponsorship BUT, we still need support:
-
volunteers to help develop our site, building skills and some engineering of irrigation systems
-
financial support to fund the purchase of a shade house - an enclosed space to rear caterpillars without wasps
-
signwriting skills to help us tell our story our wonderful community
-
butterfly carers to help with the ongoing nurturing of these special creatures
If any of these sound like something you can help with, or you just want to be kept up to date with what's going on, please fill in the google form linked through in the button below. Alternatively, reach out to rachael@uwen.org.nz for more information .

Our History
We have operated within Hobsonville over the last couple of years with the vision of creating a sustainable environment for everyone to enjoy.
Who are and what we do
HH is a community-based group of volunteers that is focused on restoring and enhancing the natural habitat around Hobsonville. We do this by engaging with the local community; removing weeds and noxious plants; reducing pest animals; and replanting water catchments and coastal esplanades. We are working closely with Auckland Council, Kainga Ora, HPRS, Kaipatiki Project, Little Creatures and others to develop a sustainable entity that is a champion for the environment and conservation. Keep up to date with what is happening by checking out our Facebook page.
Volunteer with us
We are keen to work with our community, including tangata whenua, schools and businesses to solve local environmental challenges. Habitat Hobsonville is strongly committed to health and safety, use of humane pest control methods and recording and monitoring of progress. Habitat Hobsonville is seeking more volunteers to help with improving our habitat which will encourage native birds back to our bush.
